School Council
The School Council is a vital and valued part of life at Oakview, and we are passionate about listening to the voices of our children. We believe that pupils should have a say in decisions that affect them, and our School Council provides a meaningful platform for this to happen.
Each year, two children from Years 2 to 6 are elected by their peers to represent their class. These representatives meet regularly with the Headteacher to share ideas, raise concerns, and give feedback on a wide range of school matters. From helping to improve playtimes to contributing to environmental initiatives or shaping whole-school events, the School Council plays an active role in making Oakview the best it can be.
By involving pupils in real decision-making processes, we aim to empower them, develop their leadership skills, and ensure that their opinions help shape the ongoing development of our school.
Class Names
Our School Council plays an important role in ensuring that the views of all children are heard and valued. One recent project led by the School Council focused on giving children a say in how our classes are named.
The School Council gathered feedback from children across the whole school, listening carefully to their ideas and opinions. After thoughtful discussion, the children collectively chose the theme of woodland animals as a way to represent each class.
As a result of this work, all classes have now been named by the School Council as follows:
-
Nursery – Rabbit Class
-
Reception – Mouse Class
-
Year 1 – Squirrel Class
-
Year 2 – Deer Class
-
Year 3 – Owl Class
-
Year 4 – Woodpecker Class
-
Year 5 – Fox Class
-
Year 6 – Wolf Class

This project is a strong example of how the School Council helps to shape our school community. By involving all children in decisions that affect school life, we ensure that pupils feel included, respected, and proud of their school. It also helps children to develop a sense of ownership and responsibility, reinforcing that their voices matter.
We are very proud of the leadership shown by our School Council and the thoughtful way in which they represent the views of their peers.
