Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

I am Mrs. Clark and together with Mrs. Mizon, am thrilled to be teaching you in the final year of your primary school journey.

Year 6 is an incredible year: as the oldest in the school, you’ll be role models for younger pupils — showing kindness, leadership, and setting a great example every day. This is also a big year for your learning, as we’ll be working hard to prepare for your SATs and get you ready for the move to secondary school.

There’s a lot to be excited about! In history, we’ll be exploring the fascinating world of the Ancient Mayans; in science, we’ll investigate evolution and inheritance; and in geography, we’ll take a closer look at Mexico — its culture, climate, and more. Our first D.T. topic is a creative, culinary challenge: designing and making gingerbread houses! One of the most exciting highlights will be our residential trip to PGL, where you’ll build confidence, teamwork, and make incredible memories.

Get ready for a year full of growth, new challenges and unforgettable experiences — it’s going to be amazing

Autumn 1 update

Year 6 have had a fantastic and busy start to the year, packed with exciting learning and memorable experiences.

In English this term, we've been exploring the theme of migration through two powerful texts: The Arrival by Shaun Tan and the story of the Windrush Generation. Both texts have sparked some brilliant discussions and thoughtful writing. The children have written diary entries, descriptive scenes and persuasive pieces, showing real empathy and understanding of the characters' experiences.

In maths, we have begun by revisiting place value and moving into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children have worked hard to deepen their understanding and explain their reasoning, particularly when solving multi-step problems.

As part of our PSHE curriculum, Year 6 visited Crucial Crew, where they took part in a range of interactive safety workshops. The children particularly enjoyed meeting the Transport Police and learning about railway safety and being taught how to perform CPR to the rhythm of the baby shark song! It was a valuable and eye-opening day.

One of the highlights of the half-term was definitely our two-night residential at PGL Windmill Hill. The children took part in a wide range of activities—from zip wires to raft building - showing fantastic resilience, teamwork and independence. It was great to see so many of them step out of their comfort zones and support one another.

It’s been a busy and exciting start to the year, and we’re really proud of how well the children have settled into Year 6. We’re looking forward to what the next half-term brings!

Autumn 2 update

Another busy half term has flown by in Year 6, full of exciting learning opportunities.

In science we have been learning about the circulatory system, which included a heart dissection. This lesson really brings the science to life, giving the children the opportunity to explore and examine the structures of the heart. The children showed true curiosity and great observational skills.

Despite the weather, we have also enjoyed our Forest School sessions – a great well-being break from the classroom! Team building and collaboration has been a central theme to our sessions this term, as well as our forest school favourites such as den building, hammock swinging and the fire circle.

Our DT topic this term is suitably timed for the festive season. Gingerbread Houses. Each child has designed, baked and decorated their own gingerbread house. A culinary challenge not to be underestimated, especially the construction phase… creativity and perseverance in equal measure, generating success!

Finally, in RE we have examined the question “Is Christmas just for Christians?” We have looked at religious and secular symbols of Christmas and the ways in which Christmas is celebrated in different countries around the world. We also looked closer to home and shared our own, personal favourite Christmas traditions and agreed that the Christmas spirit can bring families and communities together regardless of personal faith.

Spring 1 update

Incredibly, we have reached half term and the halfway point of the year!

English

Year 6 have been totally immersed in their English lessons this half term. They were gripped by the story of The Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. This dystopian adventure completely caught their imagination – we had great fun predicting what would come next in the story, with much theorising and good-natured debating over the plot! The children were then inspired to write their own, equally creative versions of the story. It was described by the class as ‘Book of the Year’.

Science

The children have enjoyed the practical nature of our science topic this half term as we have examined light. They have built upon the knowledge gained in Year 3: looking at how light travels, shadows, reflection and refraction, as well as looking at how our eyes actually let us see. They particularly enjoyed making shadow puppets and examining how shadows can be manipulated.

Maths

Year 6 have been working well to master the challenges of the Year 6 maths curriculum. As well as consolidating their arithmetical skills, they have been enjoying the new learning such as ratio and algebra. The CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach makes it easier for them to spot the patterns of finding unknown numbers. They are able to show and simplify expressions, as well as solving simple equations with growing confidence.
