Year 2

 Year 2’s Autumn 1 Learning Journey!

What a fantastic start to the school year Deer Class have had! We have been busy exploring new topics, developing our skills and challenging ourselves across the curriculum. The children have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity and determination in their learning. Let’s take a look at what we have been up to this half term!

Maths – Place Value, Addition and Subtraction

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, learning how to partition numbers into tens and ones and recognise the value of each digit. We have used practical resources, drawings and number sentences to help us represent numbers in different ways. We have also been building our confidence with addition and subtraction, exploring different strategies to solve calculations, including using number lines and tens and ones to help us. The children have been learning to explain their mathematical thinking and choose the most efficient methods to solve problems.

 English – Storytelling and Information Texts

Our English lessons have been full of imagination and creativity! We have been writing our own stories, developing interesting characters, describing settings and thinking carefully about how to organise our ideas into a beginning, middle and end. We have been working hard to use exciting vocabulary, interesting sentence starters and accurate punctuation to make our writing engaging for the reader.

We have also explored information texts, learning how to write clearly and organise facts to inform our readers. The children have been developing their use of headings, factual sentences and topic-specific vocabulary to share information in an engaging way. We are so proud of the creativity and growing confidence they have shown in their writing!

 Science – Animals, Including Humans

In Science, we have been exploring the fascinating topic of Animals, Including Humans. We have been learning about the different types of animals and how they can be grouped according to their characteristics. We have also been thinking about what makes humans and other animals similar and different. Through discussions, observations and activities, the children have been developing their scientific vocabulary and learning how to ask questions, notice patterns and describe what they discover. Our curiosity about the natural world has certainly been growing!

RE – Why Are Symbols Important?

In RE, we have been investigating why symbols are important to people and how they can communicate special meanings, beliefs and ideas. We have explored symbols associated with different religions and discussed how they help people express their faith and feel connected to their religious communities. The children have been encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, share their ideas respectfully and recognise that symbols can have deep personal and cultural significance.

Geography – Our Country

In Geography, we have been learning all about the United Kingdom, developing our understanding of the country we live in. We have explored the names of the four countries that make up the UK and begun to develop our knowledge of their locations. We have also been thinking about the places, features and landmarks that make our country special. Through maps, discussions and geographical activities, the children have been practising their map skills and learning to use geographical vocabulary to describe places and locations.

PE – Gymnastics

In PE, we have been developing our gymnastic skills by exploring how to link movements and sequences together. The children have practised a range of movements, balances, shapes and ways of travelling, thinking carefully about how to move safely and with control. We have been learning how to connect these movements smoothly to create our own short sequences. The children have also been developing their coordination, balance and confidence, while learning to perform with good technique and evaluate their own and others’ performances.

Forest School

We were lucky to start off our school year with Forest School sessions every Thursday. We have had so much fun exploring the woods, chilling in the hammocks, cooking in the mud kitchen, playing shops in our new shop area and of course making and eating smores over the fire pit!

What a Wonderful Half Term!

We are incredibly proud of how hard Deer Class have worked during Autumn 1. They have embraced new challenges, shared their ideas and shown fantastic curiosity across all areas of the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they develop new skills and become more independent learners.

We are looking forward to another exciting half term filled with new discoveries, creative learning and plenty of opportunities to shine. Well done, Year 2! Keep up the brilliant work!
