Literacy Tree - Our Writing Framework
Literacy Tree is a whole-school, book-based writing framework with high-quality and diverse literature at the core. Children will write for a range of audiences and purposes, leading to a main writing outcome at the end of the 2-3 week unit.
Literacy Tree transforms literacy through high quality children’s books and the book-based learning helps to improve outcomes and nurture a lifelong love of writing.
By putting literature at the heart of the curriculum, the ‘Teach Through a Text’ approach engages children and supports their diverse learning needs.
Literacy Tree teaches every aspect of English through literature that inspires all children. It focuses on diverse stories, important themes and immersive classroom experiences.
Stories matter because the children need to see their own lives and the lives of others reflected in the stories they read.
Children are immersed in rich literary experiences that spark curiosity and inspire meaningful reading and writing. Through a variety of activities, including drama, debate and discussion, they explore important themes and write with purpose for real audiences.
Each writing root lasts about 3 weeks. Links are made through themes and conventions within significant literature. Each writing root begins with a discovery point that involves dramatic conventions that help to hook the children. Literary language is taught and then applied in different forms of writing. Reading comprehension is embedded through prediction and inference. Grammar skills for writing are taught in context and applied purposefully. Spelling and vocabulary are also taught. There are opportunities for both longer and shorter pieces of writing within each writing root, ending with a final published piece.
Phonics
Phonics is delivered via the Read Write Inc. programme from Reception to Year 2. English lessons are taught using a range of high quality engaging texts as stimuli for writing. There is a strong emphasis on developing spoken language skills throughout the school.
Foundation Stage Reading:
This is where the journey begins for our children. We introduce them to single sounds within the first half term and begin to blend simple words. We follow a programme called Read Write Inc. and believe that it enables all children to learn to read and write. Children are introduced to Fred the frog who only speaks in sounds and he supports the children throughout their reading journey.
