BackBlack History Month 2026 – Black History is Hertfordshire History
Throughout October, our children have been celebrating Black History Month by exploring an important part of our local history that is not always widely known. With a focus on ‘Black History is Hertfordshire History’, the children have been learning about the lives, experiences and achievements of Black individuals with connections to Hertfordshire.
Linking to this year’s theme of ‘Honouring Our Communities’, each year group, from Year 1 to Year 6, explored a different individual through photographs, historical sources and enquiry-based activities. The children discovered their stories, the challenges they faced and the contributions they made to our local history.
As part of our celebrations, children from across the school took part in special assemblies, sharing what they had discovered with their peers. It was lovely to see the children speaking so confidently about their learning and explaining what made their chosen individuals significant.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to explore the rich and often overlooked Black history of our local area, while developing a greater understanding of the people who have helped shape our communities, both past and present.
Black history is Hertfordshire history, and an important part of our shared story.
